What to Look for When Buying a Moses Basket

The first few months of a newborn baby’s life should be filled with feelings of comfort and safety. Newborn babies are precious and fragile; they need a cozy place to rest and grow. A Moses basket is a popular bedding option for newborn babies as it provides all of the comfort of a crib and the portability of a baby hammock.

Baby baskets have been used to safely carry babies around for centuries. In fact, the Moses basket is named after the biblical character Moses. The story goes that he was left in the river Nile in a wicker basket by his mother, only to be scooped up by the Egyptian Queen. Now, we don’t suggest that you use a Moses basket to abandon your child in a bed of reeds, but the story at least describes just how safe your baby would be if you put him in a Moses basket.

There are a few reasons to buy a baby Moses basket for your child. Moses baby baskets are sort of a cross between the baby hammock and the crib. They provide more security and durability than the average baby hammock or sling because they aren’t just satchel-like cloths, but they DO provide all of the portability that a crib lacks. Moses baskets are generally small enough to carry with one arm but large enough to comfortably hold a cozy snuggled newborn. If you’re in the market for a new Moses basket for your newborn baby, there are certain details that you should look out for.

What is the Moses Basket Made Of?

Moses baskets come in a variety of materials. The prices will differ depending on the materials used but for the most part you’ll find Moses baskets made of palm, maize, and wicker. Wicker is generally the most expensive material for Moses baskets because it takes a lot longer to weave together and will provide the sturdiest foundation. If your budget allows, it would be a good idea to invest in a wicker Moses basket just because it’s the nicest one.  That being said, there’s nothing wrong with the cheaper styles either.

How Well-Made are the Handle Bars on Your Moses Basket?

When you’re talking about carrying your baby around wherever you go you need to be thinking about safety first. The handles on the Moses basket are, aside from the bedding inside the basket, possibly the most important aspect of the carrier because without proper handles the Moses basket is little more than a specialized crib.

Before you buy your Moses basket you want to make sure that the handles are comfortable in both your hands and slung on your arm. You should test their strength by giving them a few firm tugs and possibly even carry the basket around with a weight in it to see how balanced it is. You want to find a Moses basket that won’t sway too much as you hold it and you definitely don’t want to get one with shoddy handles that might fall off.

Some also come with some really cool features that you can look out for before making a purchase.  Some have a machine washable mattress, compartments to hold bottles and diapers, a moving sun screen, and other fun stuff.

Your Babies Comfort Should Be Your Number One Priority

The reason you’re thinking about buying a Moses basket in the first place is comfort. You no doubt want your baby to be at ease in his carrying case. Moses basket bedding comes in a variety of forms but the most important part is the Moses basket mattress.

You want to select a Moses basket that has a soft and welcoming mattress and you want the Moses basket sheets to be plushy and gentle on the skin.

Never realized they had these, they’re beautiful. Good point about the handles though. Now all they need to do is make a car seat base for them and you’re good to go!
